DESIGN COMMENTS & CONSTRUCTION:
The US Navy awarded Willard Marine Inc. a contract for two types of 7-m inflatable boats to service lifeboats and perform search-and-rescue missions. The standard 7-m RIB was manufactured for 25 years. In 2001, Ocean Technical Services (Otech), a full-service shipyard and RHIB manufacturer in the New Orleans metro area, took over the government contract and modified the hull.
Otech’s unique hull is designed for exceptional performance, as the deep-vee flattens to a delta-conic planning curve at the transom. The hull bottom contains a concave of spray chines that run the full length of the boat. This provides a dry ride with exceptional handling in rough waters. The design was originated by Crompton Marine Ltd., who offered 18 years of experience building and testing RIB’s in hostile North Sea conditions.
Otech hulls are a substantial transverse frame with complete longitudinal stiffeners, encapsulated in GRP running the full length of the vessel and supporting bottom spray rails. The deck is molded and purpose-built for quick tube replacement.
